October 2008

Here’s a different slant we haven’t heard too much about, but I’ll bet we’ve all thought it. A very good frind of mine Terry Brown sent a letter to the editor to the local newspaper in Salida Colorado and was printed.

We need a better interview process
Dear Editor:I’ve owned and ran businesses for 30 plus years and early in my career I became a certified interviewer with the company I was at.

Not just anyone can interview someone for a job, you’ve got to know how to ask questions – questions that pertain to the job being sought. You don’t just hire someone because you have a gut feeling.

Actually, it’s against the law to do that – you must be able to explain why someone wasn’t hired over someone else.

America needs to become educated on how to hire someone. This election just screams of a need to change our hiring process. Only three debates between the two major sides, and only one debate for the VPs?

Aren’t these folks going to be working for us? Why only three debates? Who gets to decide this? Why not have a debate every week? It’s an important job, why do we allow such a circus to be controlled by the candidates?

I’d like to grill them each like the rest of us are interviewed for a job – or do they not interview applicants for federal positions anymore?

Let’s see – if I was being interviewed, I’m sure I’d have to supply what my accomplishments were in the past and then I’d have to provide some sort of proof of them, and they would weigh my resumé against others.

If my resumé was inaccurate, I could be terminated due to providing false information on my application – does these presidential guys have to fill out an application – why not?

Next, I’d have to go through background checks to see if I had anything in my past which might make me a security risk, as you would obviously be required to have the highest of security clearances – have either passed this?

My parents always told me “the folks you hang out with defines you.”

Finally, I would be told what my job responsibility would be – not the other way around.

The American citizens should step up and prioritize it for them – not allow our candidates to say what their priorities are – that’s why we get into messes all of the time – as soon as someone becomes president, they often think they are God (or the Messiah).

I could run thousands of TV ads to tell folks I wanted to hire me what I wanted them to see, or what I wanted them to see of the other person going after the same position I was applying for – but does that answer all of the questions as to who can do the job better?

Why are there only 4.5 hours of debates?

We need a better interview process.

Terry Brown, Maysville

Last night at about 6:00pm with my wife and 12 year old daughter in tow we went over to the Florida City -City Hall building to vote. When we arrived there was a long line that seemed to be moving slowly, but moving. I believe I was the only white male in the crowd (just an observation, not an aspersion please). As we stood there for a while the thought had occurred to me maybe we should come back either tonight or, tomorrow before work, or Saturday, or Sunday after church, but then I realized nobody else was leaving or complaining and how spoiled I’ve become as a citizen of this country to think I should be able to vote just when it’s convenient.

I took the opportunity to explain to my daughter who seemed a little bored with the whole process that this was one of the greatest honors, rights, privileges and most importantly freedoms we as an American citizens have that we can vote for those who represent us. This election is historic and will change the political landscape in this country from now on. I have a lot of issues on both sides with the ones that are running in this election and have a definite point of view. But last night as we stood and made “our choices” realized it still a pretty awesome responsibility we have to vote. They say we have the leaders we deserve and it is a true and worthy statement.

Top take a-ways from the voting experience:

-my kid got a real life civics lesson

-the folks working the polls were excellent and efficient, my hats off to them

-the folks in line waiting were very well behaved and genuinely seemed happy to be part of this process

-the folks standing out on the perimeter campaigning were very respectful

-the complexion of our country has changed a lot in a very short period of time

-some say if you’re not informed on the issues don’t vote, I say vote your conscious, it’s your right

-I’m very proud of this country and what it means to be called a citizen of these United States

It would appear Philip Johnson is correct, breaking news… the story is false the woman below did it to herself. Good call Phil.

Strange days we’re in folks.

While we hear about $150,000 worth of clothes, where is the outrage over this and why isn’t it all over the media? The thug punk puke head coward mugged, beat and then carved a B (he mispelled “B”) in this poor womans face to teach her a lesson for voting for a different candidate.

What have we become folks? Brings a new meaning to “Vote or die”, how about “Vote and die”.

McCain Supporter Mutilated & Robbed By Obama Supporter in Pittsburgh!! …Update: Palin Speaks With Victim

More Hope, Change and Mutilation…
ROBBER & OBAMA SUPPORTER CARVES A “B” ON THE FACE OF McCAIN VOLUNTEER!

The McCain volunteer Ashley Todd, 20, of College Station, Texas, was robbed at an ATM then had the letter “B” carved on her face by her Obama-supporting robber.

McCain has called the Ashley’s family– The attacker said the mugger was screaming about McCain when he beat her.

WTAE Pittsburgh reported:

A 20-year-old woman who was robbed at an ATM in Bloomfield was also maimed by her attacker, police said.

Pittsburgh police spokeswoman Diane Richard tells Channel 4 Action News that the victim was robbed at knifepoint on Wednesday night outside of a Citizens Bank near Liberty Avenue and Pearl Street just before 9 p.m.

Richard said the robber took $60 from the woman, then became angry when he saw a McCain bumper sticker on the victim’s car. The attacker then punched and kicked the victim, before using the knife to scratch the letter “B” into her face, Richard said.

Richard said the woman refused medical treatment after the assault, which happened outside the view of the bank’s surveillance cameras.

The robber is described as a dark-skinned black man, 6 feet 4 inches tall, 200 pounds with a medium build, short black hair and brown eyes. The man was wearing dark colored jeans, a black undershirt and black shoes.

Years ago in another life I used to teach golf and this was one of the techniques we would use. For various reasons but usually because the student didn’t hit a bill that far and couldn’t make it to the target, but also could be a site problem. “Parallax view” I believe was the term we used to throw around and relates to depth perception. I believe many of us (your esteemed author here included) who have failed to reach our potential suffer from a “parallax view” issue.

In putting and chipping around depending on the line, grain, etc… we would tell folks to aim slightly past the hole just in order to get it there. Jack Nicklaus would even play the shot in his mind backwards, from where the target is then through his mind to the point of walking up and addressing the ball.

“Never up, never in.” you here golfers say often.

“It is a paradoxical but profoundly true and important principle of life that the most likely way to reach a goal is to be aiming not at that goal itself but at some more ambitious goal beyond it.”~ Arnold Toynbee

I’ll be the first in and first out probably today so here’s the run down so far at the LPC.

The music was just awesome, there were some sound issues at first but Zech do’d the voodoo he do’s so well and got that squared away by the 2nd song. The band played a killer set, definately some of my favorites: Holy is the Lord, Better days, Hosanna, and Doxology (David Crowder version) it was just rippin!

They showed the video of the Baptism from a couple weeks ago and saw some friends get baptized. Viola LaFaille and her son, Lisa and Stephanie Trinadad (my neighbors), and Zech (also my neighbor), along with about 10 other people. Pretty, pretty, pretty awsome to see God’s kingdom grow that way. The LPC is having hand in changing this little Homesead town one face at a time. I can’t wait to see it unfold the same way down on the southside, the Keys are ready. Ya know it kind of makes sense if we’re praying for His revival and spiritual awakening in South Florida He’d set up points North, South, East, and West, with Homestead as the epicenter.

Travis delivered a really good message on working hard and resting hard. He gave an endearing example of my friend Ela Bella and how she struggles physically, but is a GIANT in the work of the Kingdom. In my mind we should all be ashamed of ourselves if we’re not putting forth that kind of effort, I will admit personally I’m not. You ROCK Ela!

OK I got to go hit the books and get ready for my exam, hope to hook back up with the LPC crew this week to play I’m missing ’em something harsh.

Today I was out running some errands and had the the rock n’ roll station on, cuz you know I’m a rocka! Unlike the wife who we normally have to “kick it country” when we’re all together, I’m not a huge fan but some of the songs are pretty good, the lyrics kill me.

Anyway (I digress, yet again) my favorite “driving song” came on. Now this doesn’t mean it’s necessarily my favorite all time song, but one of those that when it comes on the radio you settle back, crank it to peak decible level, and take the loooong way home. This is mine, what’s yours?

I have a secret.

In with the late edition of the “Sunday muddle”, much water over the dam and under the bridge the past few weeks and the end of this tunnel anyway is in site. I’m posting from a double secret location only known to a few people, my co-workers.

So with all euphemisms out the way it’s time to journal an entry which I’m way behind on. It started a couple weeks ago when getting ready for my Life, Health, and Variable Annuity license, known as a “2-15” state license which I went to the class all last weekend and all this weekend. I currently have the 2-20 license for Property and Casualty and that was something else

We changed our Life Group night to Thursday last week and man what an excellent time, we had a couple folks that couldn’t make it and sorely missed them but it was still a great discussion. We are praying for God to heal our homes, and our bank accounts. We talked about “stuffitis” and so I had to come clean and dragged a bunch of my guitars and gear, after that some folks opened up about how they do the same thing but with different things. We all pretty much agreed we tend to have a problem with things we don’t necessarily need. I shared that I’d be giving one of the guitars away for a charity auction at my daughter’s school next month and reading the books “Financial Peace Revisited” led me to that.

Friday my daughter scored a weekend in Port St. Lucie with her grandparents and apparently had a hoot of a time. Saturday and Sunday I was in class all day while my wife worked at Homestead Hospital, time has evaporated seems like for the last 2 weeks. Oh yeah I passed my class and now I’m gearing up for the state exam which they say is a doozy but hopefully I got skills.

Read the Sunday reports and I’m really excited about the LPC southern edition down in Tavernier. It’ll take time to get that established but were just kickin’ it LPC style and I hope the Keys are ready for this!
